BIO151 Practical Training in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences

Course description for academic year 2025/2026

Contents and structure

The course consists of three months practical training at medical laboratories in Bergen (Haraldsplass Diaconess University Hospital and Haukeland University Hospital). Depending on the capacity of the medical laboratories, the practice period can cover diciplines like: clinical chemistry, histology, cytology, immunology, hematology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, medical genetics and cancer genomics.

Guided practical training in medical laboratories four (4) days each week during the period of 3 months. One (1) study day every week.

Applicants should know that only Biomedical Laboratory Science students from collaborating institutions from which Western Norway University of Applied Sciences have internship exchange agreements can apply, and the number of students each semester is limited and depending on the hospital's capacity for supervision.

Learning Outcome

On completion of this topic the student will be able to:

Knowledge:

  • Explain the principle and clinical importance of the selected analyzes and techniques
  • Describe quality assurance and safety aspects

Skills:

  • Perform the most central analyzes in the laboratories with good laboratory standards
  • Handle equipment and device used in the laboratories correct
  • Validate results

General competence:

  • Reflect on professional practice in an interdisciplinary context
  • Reflect on personal development, including ethical awareness

Entry requirements

All exams from second year of the Bachelor program in Biomedical Laboratory Science study have to be passed.

Target group is students in the 3rd year of a Bachelor degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science from collaborating institutions.

  • Hands on work in the laboratory under the supervision of a trained biomedical laboratory science worker
  • Group work and reflections based on log books
  • Seminars

Course period is 3 months.

Compulsory learning activities

  • 4 log books
  • 1 oral presentation

Assessment

Evaluation of the student`s performance of practical period according to given criteria.

Grading: Passed/Not passed
