Course description for academic year 2025/2026

Contents and structure

In practical project management, candidates collaborate in teams to execute a project during the semester. There is an emphasis on candidates addressing real-world issues with a stakeholder-oriented approach and focusing on the needs of the users. The subject is designed to enhance the candidates' competence and skills in the development, organisation, and management of real projects.

Candidates will receive a comprehensive introduction to the various phases of projects and teamwork, including theoretical instruction and an introduction to concepts, methods, and tools. Practical challenges encourage creativity and a solution-oriented approach. Candidates develop project management skills through the hands-on application of theory, tools, and methods. It is emphasised that candidates should be able to discuss and reflect at an academic level. Additionally, candidates are expected to develop and be able to reflect on their own teamwork skills, as well as practice oral presentations.

The candidate will after completing and passing this course have:

  • Project definition, as well as selection of implementation strategy and planning
  • Project management and organization
  • Leadership in projects, as well as team and team development
  • Handling uncertainty, including identification, analysis, prioritization, and development of measures to address uncertainty factors

  • Learning and innovation in projects, as well as sustainability and ethics in project work

Skills:

  • Describe theories and models for project management and apply them in practice
  • Use Excel or equivalent to develop plan documents
  • Select and apply relevant analyses and models for a given project
  • Communicate relevant professional knowledge to various stakeholders, both in writing, verbally, and visually, including the preparation of plan documents and reports
  • Reflect on one's own professional practice

General competence:

  • Collaborate in a team to create a common product
  • Critically reflect on one's own professional practice and development
  • Exchange and convey viewpoints and experiences with others in project work to contribute to the development of best practices

Teaching methods

Student-active forms of teaching inspired by project-based, problem-based and case-based learning. Presentations, based on an active and dialogue-based learning model, discussion in teams and guidance.

Compulsory learning activities

There are three course requirements:

  • Initial Report
  • Progress Report
  • Final Report

All course requirements are to be completed in teams. The requirements must be approved in order to be eligible for the exam; they are assessed as pass/fail and are only valid for the current and the following semester.

Assessment

The assessment is an oral exam in which the team presents their project work, as well as reflections, experiences, and learning accumulated throughout the semester. The exam is taken in teams and lasts for 30 minutes. It comprises a presentation part and a discussion part, during which all team members must actively participate.

If a candidate wishes to improve their grade, both the course requirements and the exam must be retaken the next time the course is offered. The grading scale is A-F, with F representing a fail.
