ING2048 The Occupational Environment

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

The course provides an introduction to various topics related to the overall working environment and the long-term healthy workplace:

  • psychosocial and organizational work environment
  • physical work environmental factors
  • ergonomics and stress, preventing and monitoring absenteeism
  • chemical work environmental factors
  • biological work environmental factors
  • external environment and waste handling

 

These topics will be related to:

  • mapping methods
  • risk assessment and impact assessments
  • laws and regulations.

Learning Outcome

-Knowledge:

The student

  • can explain problems, processes, tools and methods in the field.
  • knows the state of the art in the field.
  • can refresh his/her knowledge of methods and regulations in the field.
  • can identify, organize, assess risk and report various work environmental issues.
  • can use days of absence statistics to show correlation between these and the profitability of the company.

The student

  • can apply knowledge and relevant results from statistics, research and development to solve practical and theoretical problems and explain decisions.
  • can reflect over his/her work and adjust this under guidance.
  • can find, consider and refer to information and expertise and is able to identify  problems.
  • know the relevant expression, signs and tools, skills such as mapping and analysis methods.

General qualification:

The student:  

  • can apply relevant  and ethical issues as absolute privacy issues related to work, relation management and employee, environmental aspects.
  • can explain work environmental factors related to health and job satisfaction and the relationship between company`s efficiency and profitability
  • Can plan and execute several tasks and projects, alone and in groups, regarding ethical requirements and guidelines.
  • can provide knowledge related to the subject, verbally, written and multimedia.
  • can exchange opinions and experiences and can contribute to the development of good practice.
  • can explain creative thinking and innovation processes.

Recommended previous knowledge

 Chemistry with Environmental Focus; Systematic HES-work

Teaching methods

 Lectures, laboratory and projects.

The mandatory laboratory course consists of several exercises, several days spread over the semester.  Due to practical reasons, not all exercises are performed several times. It is important that students knows the days they have to be present. Unexcused absence can lead to failed course.

Compulsory learning activities

 Passed mandatory laboratory course.

Assessment

Part 1: Prosject, accounts for 40 % of the final grade

Part 2: Written exam, 5 hours, accounts for 60 % of the final grade

The project deals with environmental factors in a chosen company or institution. Students work on the project under guidance during the semester. The final report will be considered.

Grade A-E (passed) / F (failed)

Both parts must be passed.
