# ING2054 Statics and Strength of Materials

## Course description for academic year 2018/2019

### Contents and structure

The effects of force on structures, both simple and more complex, with an emphasis on two-dimensional forces. Resulting shear force and bending moment. Static indefinite structures. All significant elements of material mechanics such as stress and deformation. Subsequent dimension criteria, elastic materials, torsion, stresses in and deformations of beams, basic methods of beams, stress-compressed rods, and buckling.

### Learning Outcome

-Knowledge:

The students

• Have basic knowledge about the principles of statics and material mechanics.
• Have basic knowledge about how causes stress and deformation in standard structures.
• Know how material strength and functionality in a process of dimensioning controls stress and deformation.

-Skills

The students can

• Practice mathematics and physics to formulate, specify and solve problems concerning statics and  material mechanics.
• Calculate the resulting forces in static definite structures and simple indefinite structures. They can calculate the internal load, axial force, shear force and bending moment. They can draw, understand and read axial force, shear and moment diagrams.
• Calculate the stress distribution and deformation of trusses, beams, axles, frames and other  structures. They can calculate the Euler buckling load of columns with different constrains.
• Consider solutions and results critically.
• Provide theories and solving methods due to the subject.

-General qualification:

The students:

• Can understand the methods used in material mechanics of structures and knows how to choose materials.
• Have insight into the subject`s fundamental importance relatated to engineering and construction.
• Have learned to cooperate in practical projects.

### Assessment

Part 1: Written exam, 4 hours, accounts for 40% of the final grade

Part 2: Written exam, 5 hours, accounts for 60% of the final grade
