Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

The course is the last in the spring semester. The course covers issues in music education, with a particular emphasis on research texts. A teaching Practicum is included in the course. The course provides extensive knowledge about music education issues with a particular emphasis on methodological approaches in music education research and research traditions. For the teaching Practicum, an equivalent of 15 workdays is included in the course for ordinary students. Year-4 Students (in a 5-Year program) must complete their Practicum in either a primary or lower secondary school. Students that already have music training on the Bachelor level can complete their Practicum in municipal schools of music and performing arts, community music programs, or upper secondary schools. International exchange students are required to complete a mandatory assignment instead of a locally-supervised teaching Practicum.

  • Can independently and critically apply and discuss research methods in this field.

  • Can carry out music teaching of high quality, and critically analyze and discuss their teaching.

Entry requirements

Ordinary students must have completed the course Music Education Theory, part 1. International students should have thorough knowledge of concepts, theories and debates within the field of music education theory and research.

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic knowledge in music education theory.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars are offered 2-3 days per week in the course period. Active participation in lessons and independent literature studies is expected of all students. Students are also expected to contribute with presentations of course literature and their own research project, as well as to comment on other students' presentations. Students are also expected to form study groups.

Compulsory learning activities

Ordinary students must have passed Course 1, Music Education Theory, Part 1.

Instead of the Teaching Practicum, international exchange students must give an oral presentation about music teaching in Norway compared to their native country. The presentations will be graded Pass/Fail. Guidelines for presentations and assessment will be announced at the start of the course.

Assessment

Individual oral exam (30 minutes) on a given topic from the course literature. The exam questions are handed out to all students approximately 4 weeks before the exam, and each student will then be assigned a specific question by draw 2 weeks before the exam. Date, time and guidelines for the oral exam will be announced on Canvas (online course platform). The exam language is Norwegian or English (optional). New/postponed exam will be conducted as an oral exam. Grading: A-F (F is a failing grade).

The Teaching Practicum will be graded Pass/Fail. Guidelines for assessment is described in more detail in the Teaching Practicum guidelines.
