NAB2052 Marine Machinery

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

 Basic knowledge about machinery and engine room systems within the technical ship equipment.

Learning Outcome

- Knowledge:

The students should know how marine motors are built up and how these work. They should have an understanding of the diesel engine systems and be familiar with small, medium and large diesel engines. The students should have a thorough knowledge of the operation of vessels and engine installations, engines run by steam or gas, and also refrigeration systems and hydraulic systems.

- Skills:

The students should be able to do basic bunker calculations, calculations within refrigeration and hydraulic calculations.

- General Qualifications:

The students should know the operating principles of marine power plants, ships¿ auxiliary machinery and have a general knowledge of marine engineering terms as described in STCW 78 as Amended, table A-II/2. They should also know of security measures onboard as requires in the ISPS Code.

 None.

Recommended previous knowledge

 NAB1001 Physics, NAB2011 Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

 Lectures and possible excursions

Compulsory learning activities

 Written assignments (will be specified at the beginning of the semester).

Assessment

Written exam, 3 hours, accounts for 100 % final grade.

Calculator (Texas TI 84) will be delivered by the school. Teknisk formelsamling med tabeller by Svein Erik Pedersen, Jan Gustavsen, Svein Kaasa og Oddmund Olsen will be delivered by the school.
