ING4006 Advanced Fire and Egress Modelling

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

Fire development and its consequences for people and structures to be analyzed and modeled. Thermal load on structures and smoke spread  is modeled by CFD to provide information on available time for evacuation. Group behavior in fire and human response patterns during evacuation should be analyzed and discussed. Required evacuation time to be modeled and compared with available evacuation time. Modelling will form basis for the selection of impact reducing measures (barriers) so that the damage is limited.

Candidates

  • can discuss and understand people and groups behaviour in fire
  • can model and analyze design of escape routes, effect of toxic gases and reduced visibility
  • can model fire -- under various useful conditions -- with the help of freely available softwares
  • can understand mathematical models of fire
  • can describe the basic equations in a CFD code and solution methodology and explain how combustion, soot production and radiation models

Skills

Candidates

  • can make use of hand calculations to estimate the time for evacuation
  • can use advanced simulation programs to calculate time for evacuation from different scenarios
  • can calculate FED (Fractional Effective Dose) and indicate adverse effects as a result of this
  • can implement numerical calculations within fluid mechanics and heat transfer as well as advanced mass and heat balances for fire development and smoke spread using simulation programs
  • can use numerical techniques RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes) and LES (Large Eddy Simulations) and explain the differences between them.
  • can use CFD programs to calculate trends in temperature and pressure during fire
  • can identify and assess weaknesses in design with regard to consequence of fire in the building, industry and transport

 General competence

  • can make qualified assessments for successful evacuation from fires and propose improvement
  • can explain and discuss time in a modeling project
  • can use various simulation methods for modelling fire
  • can use fire modelling tools -- such as FDS -- for modelling fire
  • can explain a mathematical model to represent fire

Teaching methods

The course will be based on collections of lectures, exercises, demonstrations and problem-based learning. Group Works and independent study with guidance is also used.

Compulsory learning activities

Nothing

Assessment

Portfolio assessment (50 %) and oral exam (50 %).

Both parts must be passed.

Grade:  A - E : passed;  F : fail.
