MSB102 Innovation Theory and Practice

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

This course aims to provide the students with advanced knowledge of innovation and factors that inhibit and promote innovation milieus. Students are provided with tools to understand, analyze and develop such milieus both within organizations and in inter-organizational collaborations. Theories and organizational practices related to innovation processes, inter-organizational collaborations such as open innovation and networks, spin-offs, accessing and utilizing internal and external resources are key topics. The course also gives insight into and discuss various innovation models for organizations, networks, ecosystems and places.

Learning Outcome

 

Upon completion of the course, the student: 

  • has advanced knowledge of innovation.  
  • has advanced knowledge of inter-organizational collaborations such as open innovation, innovative networks and innovation ecosystems.  
  • has advanced knowledge of factors that promote and inhibits innovation within organizations and in innovative milieus. 
  • can apply knowledge to new areas within academic fields related to innovation. 
  • can analyze academic problems in the innovation fields based on the distinctive characteristics and place in society and organizations. 

  

 

Upon completion of the course, the student can: 

  • analyze and deal critically with various sources of information and use them to structure and formulate scholarly arguments within the field of innovation and in particular on how to build strong innovation milieu.  
  • analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations in innovation and work independently on practical and theoretical problems related to building an innovation milieu.  

  

 

Upon completion of the course, the student can:  

  • communicate extensive independent work and master language and terminology of the innovation field. 
  • communicate, analyze, and conclude academic issues in innovation, and innovative milieus to specialists and the general public.  
  • contribute to new thinking and innovation processes.       
  • apply her/his knowledge and skills in new areas to carry out advanced assignments and projects.

Admission to Master`s Programme in Business

No additional requirements 

Teaching methods

Lectures reviewing and discussing the literature.  

Working seminars where students are expected to present selected articles and use the theories to analyze practical problems. In these seminars, we will also discuss how to write an essay. 

Compulsory learning activities

One mandatory written assignment and two oral presentations

Assessment

Exam in two parts: 

  1. Essay, in groups of two or three students (40% of the final assessment). 
  2. Written examination, 5 hours (60% of the final assessment).  

The grading scale is A-F where F is failing. 

Students must achieve a passing grade in both parts to get a final grade for the course.
