NAB2015 Methods for Nautical Science

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

The students receive a thorough introduction to social science research methods. Through lectures and practical exercises, the students are introdused to the basics of planning and running qualitative and quantitative research approaches and methods. The subject is suitable for any of our students, but is particularly suitable for students that are writing their bachelor thesis the following semester.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

Have an understanding of the different steps in a research process.

Acquire knowledge about quantitative and qualitative research designs.

Acquire knowledge about quantitative and qualitative sampling techniques.

Skills:

Can define research questions and knows how to limit these, and to define relevant concepts and problems.

Can reflect upon the possibilities for generalization, as well as discuss problems connected to validity and reliability, sources of errors, and misinterpretations in empirically based studies.

Can select methodically approaches to empirical analyses of different research problems.

 

General Qualifications:

 

The students will receive an introduction to social science methods. The students must be able to reflect over research ethics. They will be able to assess alternative qualitative and quantitative research designs and methods, and be able to read papers and journals presenting results.
