MOØ233 Digital organization and management

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

This course is one of the elective specialization courses targeted towards the master's thesis. The course combines lectures, videos, guest lectures, and seminars with an expectation of active participation from the students. During the course, the students work on an academic research proposal. Time is allocated for this work, including time for literature search and perusal, and feedback on drafts.

Topics in this course are related to organization and management in a digital age, for instance how digital technologies and exploiting these enable or entail a transformation of:

  • products and services,
  • organizational structures and processes,
  • core organizational capabilities,
  • leadership,
  • intraorganizational collaboration,
  • interaction between human employees and digital solutions such as robotics and artificial intelligence.

We also discuss issues related to sustainability, as well as ethical dilemmas and legislative issues related to the use of digital technologies in organizational life and value creation.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

On completion of the course the student has advanced knowledge on and understanding of:

  • how digital technologies enable and entail organizational transformation;
  • digital technology and digital solutions that can influence the organization and its behavior and value creation.

Skills

On completion of the course the student:

  • is able to explain and discuss how digital technologies enable and entail organizational transformation;
  • can critically reflect upon, and apply theories and methods in the fields of organization and management, and digitalization/digital transformation;
  • can participate constructively and make research-based suggestions in organizational change processes enabled or required by digital technology.

General Competence

On completion of the course the student:

  • is able to work both independently and in teams on practical and theoretical problems;
  • is able to present the results of such work in oral and written form;
  • can communicate relevant topics to both specialists and non-specialists;
  • knows when further expertise is necessary, and where it can be found.

Entry requirements

None

Recommended previous knowledge

Introductory course in organizational theory such as MOØ222 Technology Management 1 and ethics or an equivalent course.

Teaching methods

Lectures (including guest lectures), organized seminars with student presentations, self-study.

Compulsory learning activities

Students (in groups of 2-3 students) should present a master thesis in a seminar. Students should also present ideas and drafts for their research proposal.

Assessment

Term paper in the form of an academic research proposal, written in groups (maximum 2 students; normally the same group that will write the master thesis together). Length of the term paper: approximately 20 pages (+/- 10%), font size 12, line spacing 1,5. Grading scale: A-F.
