MSB211 Digital Organisation and Management

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

In this course, we study and discuss leadership challenges related to digitalization and accomplishing a digital transformation as well as leading organizations in the digital era. The course addresses the following issues:

- how digital technologies and exploiting these enable and entail a transformation of organizational structures, business processes, competence, and capabilities;

- how leaders at different levels can lead strategic change processes;

- how intraorganizational paradoxes and tensions might hinder productive collaboration and digital transformation, and how leaders can and should manage these;

- how leaders might lead employees engaging in virtual work enabled by digital platforms;

- issues and threats related to the use of digital technologies in terms of ethics, cyber security and privacy

The course is a part of Master of Science in Business (MSB) - profile Campus Bergen: Management and innovation.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course students will have advanced knowledge of:

  • how digital technologies enable and entail organizational transformation of private and public organizations;
  • concepts, theories and practices related to the research fields included in the course, such as digital transformation, leading strategic change, organizational tensions, and virtual work.

Skills

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • explain and discuss how digital technologies enable and entail organizational transformation;
  • critically reflect upon, and apply theories and methods in the fields of organization and digital transformation;
  • participate constructively and make research-based suggestions in organizational change processes enabled or required by digital technology.

General Competence

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • undertake consultancy work in the areas of digital transformation, organization and leadership in the digital era of technology;
  • work both independently and in teams on practical and theoretical problems;
  • present the results of such work in oral and written form;
  • communicate relevant topics to both specialists and non-specialists;
  • know when further expertise is necessary, and where it can be found.

Recommended previous knowledge

Recommended previous knowledge: Completion of first and second semesters.

Teaching methods

The course will combine lectures, guest lectures, self-study of relevant literature, literature presentations from students, excursions to relevant organizations, and feedback on written work.

The course will be taught in Norwegian or English, subject to demand. Examinations and assignments should be submitted in Norwegian or English

Compulsory learning activities

During the semester, each student should present at least one academic paper, and one master thesis in a seminar. Students should also present ideas and drafts for their term paper.

The presentations can be done in groups of 2-4 students.

Assessment

Term paper elaborating on a topic relevant to the course, written in groups (max. 3 students). Length of the term paper: approximately 20-25 pages (+/- 10%), font size 12, line spacing 1,5. Grading scale: A-F.
