GE491 Bachelor Thesis in Geology
Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
The bachelor thesis is the final course in the bachelor program and is completed in the last year of study. Students must carry out an independent, research-oriented project based on realistic research questions that require knowledge and skills from key topics in the program. The thesis is within geology, and the topic must be chosen from areas where the department has supervisory competence and capacity. The work is normally done in groups and may be linked to assignments and research projects in which the department is involved, or in collaboration with an external partner.

None
Recommended previous knowledge
Students should have completed 90 ECTS credits courses within the bachelor programme in geology and geohazards or equivalent.
Teaching methods
Independent work with supervision from one or more teachers. It is normal for 2 - 3 students to write their thesis together. It is not possible to be more than 3 students in each group.
Compulsory learning activities
- Mandatory participation in seminars.
- Submission of introduction and progress plan.
- Oral group presentation of the thesis before the submission deadline.
All activities must be completed within the given deadlines.
Assessment
Bachelor's Thesis. Grading: A-F, where F represents a fail.
If the bachelor thesis is written as a group project, the rules for group examinations apply, and the grade will be the same for all group members. In the case of a failed examination, the group may submit an improved version in the following semester.
