SYKH110 Academic Education and Academic Skills
Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
The subject aims to develop students' knowledge of different professions, their understanding of their own subject area, and their reflection on learning and ethics. This is done in relation to sustainable development to promote perspectives and theories that increase understanding of contemporary globalisation, and provide a basis for mastering complex challenges. The course helps students be active and curious, take responsibility for their own learning, and develop their ability to innovate.
The concept of sustainability encompasses a conservation perspective, but also includes a desire for innovation and development. Sustainability rests on three equal pillars: ecological sustainability, economic sustainability (including equality), and socio-cultural sustainability (including global social justice).
Education reflects how a person's personality, behaviour, and morals are shaped in a society. The human ability to shape oneself and be shaped by knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour helps people live meaningfully in and with the world. Education is what allows civilised, sustainable, and free societies to exist and enables them to deal with historical situations.
Education builds people and society. Education is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and abilities, an essential part of education that enables people to participate in a changing society.
The writing process is central to academic education, and the academic craft is linked to writing academic texts in this course.
The course is a common subject for all bachelor's programmes at HVL and is taken in the first semester.
The course content includes: ethics, theory of science, scientific methods, sustainability, academic writing, information literacy, use of sources, communication, collaboration, and professional history.
