RE6-2010 Experience Economy & Storytelling

Contents and structure
In Experience Economy and Storytelling, students learn how to combine economics, marketing, and culture to create meaningful experiences that generate revenue. The course covers product development within what we refer to as theme and niche-based tourism. It explores how to use cultural resources, both physical and intangible, from idea to finished experience. Students will also learn how to use storytelling and dramaturgy to engage customers and create memorable experiences, both as part of an experience or as a complete experience.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
Students will have knowledge of:
- Theories and principles in experience economy and storytelling.
- Key topics in theme-based tourism such as health, transport, culinary tourism (food and drink), dark tourism, and other types of tourism based on our natural and cultural heritage.
- Methods for product development in experience economy and storytelling.
- The service encounter, the experience space, and factors that influence this service encounter.
- The use of stories in theme-based tourism and the experience industries.
- How theoretical frameworks and dramaturgy are used in product development, stories, and experiences.
- The importance of theatrical and storytelling components in the service encounter.
- Various digital platforms and social media for different types of themed products and stories.
- Research and development work in the field of themed experiences and storytelling.
- The history, traditions, uniqueness, and societal role of the subject of experience economy and storytelling.
Skills
Students will be able to:
- Find, evaluate, and refer to information and academic material and present it.
- Create meaningful products and experiences in theme-based and niche tourism.
- Create meaningful stories, either as part of an experience or as a complete experience.
- Analyze and evaluate experience-based products and services.
- Identify issues and find, evaluate, and refer to information and academic literature that can solve an issue.
- Use stories and convey them through the experience space, souvenirs, and staff.
- Explore how stories can be used to connect people and communities, visitors, and destinations.
General Competence
Students will be able to:
- Find and use resources, both material and immaterial, such as buildings, text, information, and personal stories, evaluate and use them, and integrate them into experiences, stories, and narratives.
- Plan and carry out varied tasks and projects over time, both individually and in groups, within themed experiences and storytelling.
- Communicate central academic material such as theories, issues, and solutions, both in writing and orally, and other relevant forms of expression that can exchange viewpoints and experiences with others in the same field, leading to the development of good practices.
- Be familiar with and apply innovation and creativity in experience economy and storytelling.
- See the connection, develop and reflect on the link between themed experiences, responsible tourism, and sustainable tourism.
- Have insight into how the experience economy and storytelling can contribute to sustainable development in the tourism industry.

Teaching methods
Lectures, group work, field work, practice, independent work, practical exercises, digital learning methods, company visits.
Compulsory learning activities
Up to 3 coursework requirements must be passed to take the exam.
Assessment
Home exam in groups (2-4 people) for 3 days, counts 100% of the grade.
Grades between A and F will be given, where F corresponds to fail.
