Project summary

Grief is a universal human experience, yet it can also lead to persistent health and social challenges. The likelihood of complicated or prolonged grief is influenced by individual factors (e.g., age, cognitive capacity, previous losses), relational factors (e.g., closeness or dependency), and circumstances surrounding the death (e.g., sudden, unexpected, or stigmatised deaths). The groups included in this project are characterised by one or more of these risk factors, making adequate grief support particularly important. At the same time, aspects of their life circumstances may hinder access to appropriate support. Grief reactions may be misinterpreted through the lens of substance use, autism, or other contextual factors, or their grief may be insufficiently acknowledged due to relational or situational circumstances surrounding the death. These group‑specific risks and potential barriers to support will be addressed within each work package. Bringing the work packages together within a shared project enables methodological alignment, mutual development, and cross‑cutting analyses. Joint analyses may explore similarities and differences in conditions for grief support, barriers and facilitators, and broader relational or family‑oriented perspectives. The combined data material also provides opportunities for additional research questions beyond those defined in each work package. Collaboration across work packages strengthens the project’s overall potential for knowledge development and allows for shared activities such as dissemination, analytical work, and development of digital learning resources. A key task moving forward will be to clarify which elements should be harmonised across work packages and where variation is appropriate.
