Contents and structure
Introduction to hydrostatic, stability and trim on ship or vessel.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The student:
- Has broad knowledge within central topics, issues, tools and methods within hydrostatics and stability.
- Has knowledge of initial stability, trim, list, dynamic and static stability, effect of free liquid surface, icing, loadline and damage stability.
- Knows of reserach and development within hydostatics and stability
- can update their knowledge within hydostatics and stability
Skills
The student:
- Can demonstrate which factors affect a vessel's hydrostatics and stability
- Can carry out calculations within stability, damage stability, trim, list, dynamic stability, static stability, free liquid surface effect, icing and loadline
- Can use hydrostatic data to solve stability and trim issues for a specific vessel
- Can do well founded choices based on academic and professional knowledge and relevant results from reserach and development within hydrostatics and stability
- Can find, evaluate and refer to information and use this on relevant issues related to hydrostatics and stability
- Can reflect on central topics within maintenance, hydrostatics and stability in a sustainable perspective
General competence
The student:
- Can communicate relevant academic content as theories, problems and solutions in writing and orally
- Can disseminate views related to ship stability, construction or design with others within the maritime domain amd contribute to development of practice
- Can plan and execute tasks and projects within ethical standards and regulations
- Has competence in accordance with relevant parts of STCW 78 as Amended, table A-II/1 and A-II/2

Teaching methods
Lectures, work shops and assignements when onboard
Compulsory learning activities
There will be three compulsory assignments of which 2 must be approved.
Assignments will consist of up to 20 tasks each.
Each assignment will be a combination of given lectures and mathematical computations.
Dates for submission of compulsory work will be given at the start of the semester.
Assessment
Written exam, 5 hours
Graded A - F, where "A" is best score and "E" is the lowest pass score. Grade "F" is reserved for excam not passed.
