Research areas

Research interests: Relational pedagogy, dialogic musical encounters, creative teaching and learning, pedagogical improvisation. Ph.D. (2014) Star experiences or gym hall aesthetics? – a study of musicians’ quality conceptions in visiting school concerts. Holdhus explicitly studies communication processes between musicians, teachers and pupils in visiting music practices and musical partnerships. 

2017-2020 Kari was project-leader of an innovation project on Norwegian professional visiting concerts, called School and concert – from transmission to dialogue (www.diskoprosjektet.no).The project aimed at developing alternative forms of music visits in schools by emphasizing dialogic encounters between musicians, teachers and pupils, allowing pupils’ agency and creativity. Holdhus currently is engaged as a researcher in “Music teacher education for the Future” (FUTURED 2019-2022), exploring potential development and change in Norwegian general teacher education in music.
