The research group Voice InFormation (Sang i danning) at Western Norway University of applied Sciences, invites you to a symposium where the main focus is on song as communication and community.
We have invited the following guests to present their work and/or conduct workshops:
- Susanna Mesiä, (Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland) - Dave Camlin (Royal College of Music, UK) - Dhanashree PanditRai (University of Mumbai).
As educators and researchers, we constantly need to develop our language related to artistic work and the pedagogical and artistic processes that take place when we work practically and performatively with songs. During the symposium, there will be parallel sessions where participants can present their work, receive comments as well as participate in discussions.
Do you want to present something or do a small workshop? Please send your abstract with a short tile and description of maximum 500 words before Oct. 1st to Gro.Espedal@hvl.no
You can also particpate without a presentation. The registration deadline is November 1st.
Invited Guests
SUSANNA MESIÄ holds a Doctor of Music degree (research based) in music education (Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, 2019). Currently she works at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences as a senior lecturer teaching popular music and jazz vocals, educating instrument teachers, supervising Master’s thesis and working in various projects. She has also taught workshops in several European higher education institutions. In addition to her teaching career, Mesiä has been performing as a vocalist, musician, and songwriter/composer in the Finnish music scene. As a researcher Mesiä’s interest focuses on popular music and jazz education, collaborative processes, student-centred learning, higher music education, instrumental pedagogy and continuing professional development. She has presented in international and domestic conferences and published in professional and peer-reviewed journals.
DAVE CAMLIN I’m a musician based in west Cumbria, UK and my practice includes performance, composition, teaching, community music and research. I’m motivated by a belief that music is about the performance of ‘relationships’ as much as it is the performance of ‘works’, and that collaborative music making can be a resource for people to begin to occupy a more equitable social and political reality as an alternative to the dehumanising conditions of late capitalism.
I perform in various guises and lead a number of community choirs in the Natural Voice (NVN) tradition. I lecture in in Music Education at the Royal College of Music and Trinity-Laban Conservatoire in London and was Head of Higher Education and Research at Sage Gateshead in NE England from 2010-19. My research focuses on group singing, music health and wellbeing, musician training and Community Music, and I have pioneered the use of Sensemaker ‘distributed ethnography’ as a method for arts and cultural research. I’m working on a book for Intellect publishers due for publication in 2022 entitled Music Making and The Civic Imagination.
