Prosjektsamandrag

Physical exercises are important in diabetes mellitus (DM) management, and recommended for reducing the risks for developing diabetic complications (Boulé et al., 2001). Aerobic and resistance exercises are effective in primary and secondary prevention of diabetes type 2, improving glucose metabolism (Sigal et al., 2004, Warburton et al., 2006).The prevalence of DM risk factors is increasing in Tanzania and there are no prevention interventions (Njelekela et al. 2009). The purpose of this pilot study is to experiment how best to promote physical activity and organize training classes for diabetes patients in a Tanzanian context, and to test the effects of aerobic training on cardio respiratory fitness. Training groups with moderate/high intensity training will be followed and tested for two months, and patients' perceptions about the training explored. In a long term perspective, preventive physical activity/training groups can be organizised elsewhere in Tanzania.
