This lecture provides an overview of key evidence on physical activity in early childhood education and care (ECEC). It examines how children’s movement is shaped by daily routines, educator decisions, organisational structures and the physical environment, drawing on international research and global movement guidelines.

The session highlights common challenges in increasing physical activity during the ECEC day, the role of educator facilitation, and the importance of space and environmental affordances. Practical examples and insights from the Croatian context are included, along with strategies for supporting meaningful and developmentally appropriate movement opportunities for young children.
