The Norwegian salmon farming industry makes an important contribution to sustainable development by supporting the transition from less sustainable protein sources (e.g., beef and other meats) to seafood-based proteins, while also generating economic growth in rural coastal communities. 

However, these contributions to development are accompanied by environmental challenges. Among other things, fish mortality in the industry is high, and there is therefore a political desire to reduce mortality in the aquaculture industry to 5%.
