A meta-synthesis: Father experiences of early discharge after birth.
Abstract
Background: The early post-partum period are demanding for the parents and a distinguished transitional period. The mother experiences the greatest changes and the father are usually her most important person in supporting her. Early discharge after birth were available for low-risk women, who want to go home, has no become a common practice in most European country. The definition of early discharge wary among the country, from six to sixty hours after birth. Today, most women in Norway are discharge 2 hours after the birth. It is important all family members experiences this transitions period as good, this may be an advantage for the childhood. Knowledge about the fathers’ experiences are therefor important. The aim of this study was to explore and describe fathers’ experiences according to early discharge after childbirth.
Method: We used Meta-ethnography according to Noblit and Hare. Inclusion criteria: Seven days after discharge from hospital and both mother and child were discharge, qualitative peer-reviewed studies, and English and Scandinavian language. Databases: CINAL, Medline, PsykInfo, Maternity and Infant Care, SweMed+. The Keywords: early discharge, father experiences, parents’ experiences. Librarian was used. Title and abstract was read of two authors, identifying relevant article according to the aim. Next is reading full text article and using a critical appraisal instrument for validation of the includes articles.
