Prosjektsamandrag
Pain is a leading stressor for patients hospitalised in acute care due to a range of causes including the underlying reason for admission, surgery and pain related to nursing procedures (2).Structured nursing observations followed by interventions based on standardized algorithms is the key for pain management in the intensive care unit (ICU) (3). Optimal pain management are challenging in the critically ill patients because of intubation, sedation, delirium, brain damage; or dementia, making the patients unable to communicate their pain. Poorly identified pain might result in poor management, causing both over- and under-use of analgesic and sedative agents.Suffering from pain during acute care may lead to severe complications during the acute illness, and long lasting suffering and pain syndrome after hospital stay. A combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are needed for optimal pain management and improved patient outcomes. Our project will take advantage of firm foundation amongst national and international nursing research, and an extended interdisciplinary team with vast networks to help fulfil the overarching aim.
